HIGHLIGHTS & DEVELOPMENT OF B.A.M.B.I. 1982 – 2009 

  
This is a VERY ‘potted’ history of BAMBI over nearly 28 years. It does not include all the dozens of good causes we’ve supported, special events, talks and meetings arranged and the many, many amazing things the committees and members have achieved over the years. 
 
For further details please note that the full archive of BAMBI magazines is currently kept at Mel’s house (in the office). They are very precious as they are the only full record that we have of BAMBI’s history. 
  
1982. April 7: 
First BAMBI meeting. Seven new mums and Mel.  
May: 
Name chosen – BAMBI
B100 to join (annual membership) 
B 20 fee for meetings held at various members’ homes 
Hospital visits for new mums (Samitivej & Bangkok Nursing Home). 
 
December:            
First Christmas party at Jo McKenzie’s (about 30 attended) 
First Charity donation. Toys collected at the party and given to Father Jo Maier’s Human Development Foundation, Klong Toey. 
                            
1983 
January: 
Phone a friend list (early BUDDIES) 
 
February:
A member reported finding a Montessori playgroup! 
Suggested – A BAMBI book of recipes – still waiting!  Any volunteers? 
BAMBI notice board placed at Kathy Naemawathana’s shop AWE. Volunteers to update needed. (What’s new?!) 
BAMBI’s lucky talisman the ‘BOING’ Baby put in News Letter March
Wanted Newsletter Editor – finish/Proof read, Co-coordinator. 
 
April 
Volunteers needed for help at meetings + BAMBI toy box donations. 
First birthday – 60 members. 
First guest speaker. Dr. Colin Britton, “Emergencies in the Home” 
BAMBI birthday page started

Charlene Hodgin uses computer for database/playgroups etc.

Buy & Sell of goods for members at monthly B.C.  Meetings. 10% to BAMBI. 
 
October 
BAMBI in magazine format. Adverts being taken. Cover designed by Kristin Headlam.  First AGM for election of Committee (before BAMBI Constitution). Mel appointed Chairwoman. 
  
1985 
June 
Volunteers for visits to Pakred & Phyathai Baby homes. 
 
August  
Postnatal support team set up to help Mel with hospital visits (Samitivej & Bangkok Nursing Home) to new mothers. 
  
  
1986 
January  
Idea for BAMBI ‘blood bank’ introduced Mel made Honorary President & Advisor Membership over 200.
 
March    
EGM called to discuss draft Constitution. Drafted by BAMBI member & lawyer Beth Hilton-Thorpe.  
Constitution voted on and accepted 
AGM changed to May of each year 
 
June
BAMBI Blood Bank established 
 
September 
Night Owls Group formed for mums with babies who don’t or won’t sleep. 
 
November
Problem Register set up for members with children/families with special needs. (Now known as BAMBI Support). 
December Christmas party at British Club. 100 members + 120 children. 
  
1987 
January  
Lending equipment set up for mums from overseas

First Songkran Splash Party 
4th AGM 
BAMBI Babes morning – mums with babes under 9 months. Held in member’s homes. 
Recipe Book – ‘food for Thought’ B50. No copies remain. 
 
September 
First  ‘outside’ charity donation from TRANSPO International. B10, 000.  ‘Families with healthy and happy children benefit the lives of everyone’. 
BAMBI sponsored salaries for ward assistants at the Pakred Baby Home. 
 
November 
BAMBI ‘stand’ at Ploenchit Fair held in British Embassy grounds. 
First Christmas gift (large beach ball) for BAMBI members’ children at Christmas party.    
          
December 
Christmas Party at British Club. Members gift donations for charity. 
 
 
1988

Activities: Sheila Kitzinger visited Bangkok. (Famous British ‘birth guru & author) Gave a talk to BAMBI mums at Mel’s Bangkok Maternity Centre. 
Swimming lessons for babes and toddlers 
CPR instruction First Aid for Maids and Mums

First Bring & Buy held at British Club. Reported to be ‘very successful.’

BAMBI magazine special ‘green’ issue to mark world environmental day.

BAMBI Crawlers Club introduced for ‘crawlers, bottom shufflers and puller uppers’ 
Robert Swan’s visit (world famous Artic & Ant-artic ice walker) gave a talk to BAMBI members. 
  
1990 
January
Charity support. Visit to Khunying Kanittha’s WE-TRAIN center for abused women.

Joan French set up BAMBI group in Kathmandu, KAMBI.

Joan French, founder of KAMBI died. KAMBI gradually disbanded.

Built School for Hill Tribe Children at Baan Dong Khu 
 
December  
Mel & Chairwoman, Diana Rees- Jones visited BAAN Dong Khu to officially open school on behalf of   BAMBI. 
Hospital survey produced by Anna Ingham and Maria Cooper on sale for B150 per copy.

Charity dinner/dance to raise funds for Baan Dong Khu Water Project.

Andrea Robertson, Internationally renowned childbirth educator gave talk to BAMBI expectant parents.

BABIES moved from Community Services to the Novotel Hotel. 
Margo Jarnson, magazine editor introduced New Format Magazine black/white with some color. Scan Media Company to print and post out.

Andrea Robertson’s 2nd talk and Active Birth workshop

Website inaugurated.

BAMBI comes under the ‘umbrella’ of the CBFT   (Childbirth & Breastfeeding Foundation of Thailand). 
Talk by Robin Pascoe (News Letter editor 1983.) to introduce her book, a movable marriage. Relocate your relationship without breaking it.

BAMBI 20th birthday

Mel’s ‘A Guide to Having Your Baby in Bangkok’ published.

Support Groups now up to 9 for parents and children with ‘special needs’.
